A universe of fireflies paid tribute to the late Bray Wyatt Friday night.

The professional wrestling world was stunned Thursday with news of the passing of Windham Rotunda, known better to fans as Bray Wyatt, at the age of 36.

Friday night, WWE paid tribute to its former champion and his many unforgettable moments.

Find out how with this recap of the August 25 Fox presentation.

Match Card

1 OF 8

Advertised in advance of Friday's show were:

    • Non-Title Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Grayson Waller
    • WWE Women's Championship Match: Zelina Vega vs. Iyo Sky (c)

Bray Wyatt Tribute

2 OF 8

WWE honored the life and legacy of Bray Wyatt at the top of Friday's show, with his friends and wrestling family gathered on the entrance ramp.

A beautiful video package highlighting his best moments, the relationships he formed in and out of the ring, and his family aired before the rocking chair that was such a key part of his presentation was spotlighted to close the segment.

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Michael Cole introduced a 10-bell salute for both Wyatt and the great Terry Funk, who the wrestling world lost Wednesday.
    • Erick Rowan and Braun Strowman joined Triple H and the rest of the WWE Superstars on the roster. As two members of the Wyatt Family, they absolutely belonged there.
    • Enough cannot be said about WWE's production team and their work on the video package presented here. It was befitting a man as eclectic, charismatic and captivating as Wyatt.

Non-Title Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Grayson Waller

3 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Michael Cole addressed the WWE Universe, telling fans that there is nothing Wyatt and Funk wanted more than to entertain them. With that, he threw it to the night's first match, saw United States champion Rey Mysterio battle the brash, arrogant Grayson Waller non-title action.

A solid, competitive match saw Mysterio in control until Austin Theory interrupted and Santos Escobar made the save. The action broke down, with both outside influencers impacting the match but, ultimately, Mysterio scored the win.

Based on the staredown between the LWO, Theory, and Waller that concluded the segment, it would certainly appear as though we are headed for a tag team match on next Friday's show. Considering the talent involved, that is hardly a bad thing.

As for Payback, expect a solid match between Mysterio and Theory that ends, most likely, with the heel regaining a title he probably never should have lost.

    Result

    Mysterio defeated Waller

    Grade

    B

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Michael Cole, Corey Graves and Kevin Patrick revealed on commentary that Mysterio will defend the United States against Austin Theory at Payback on September 2 while Waller will host Cody Rhodes on his talk show segment.
    • Theory interrupted the match and Escobar followed as the action broke down late.
    • One of the early Wyatt Family vignettes aired after the match as the celebration of the former WWE champion continued.

WWE Women's Championship Match: Zelina Vega vs. Iyo Sky

4 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

The women's division is in good hands with Iyo Sky as its champion on Friday nights, as evidenced by her first title defense against Zelina Vega.

Sky and Vega tore the house down in a really fun, energetic title bout that demonstrated how good the champion is and how underrated an in-ring worker the spunky underdog Vega is.

Damage CTRL retained its control over the division by way of Sky's victory but Vega proved she is a legitimate contender and someone who should be in the hunt more consistently, especially given the fans' reaction to her in Louisville.

    Result

    Sky defeated Vega to retain

    Grade

    B+

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Graves put over Vega's background in the indies, something that has flown under the radar in the company's portrayal of the veteran in-ring competitor.
    • Sky narrowly survived the Meteora while Vega kicked out of a sunset flip bomb.
    • This was a hell of a showing from Vega, who has impressed every time she has had the opportunity and has earned this push as an in-ring competitor here in 2023.

Cody Rhodes Paid Tribute To WWE Hall of Famer, Terry Funk

5 OF 8

There are only a handful of genuine contenders to the title of "best professional wrestler ever" and Terry Funk is one of them.

He was gritty, tough, wild, chaotic, engaged, and above all else, believable.

He was also one of the most selfless workers in the industry, a man who knew the importance of putting others over to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of the industry he devoted his life to.

Friday, Cody Rhodes paid tribute to one of his father, Dusty's, greatest foes with the respect and admiration you would expect from a man whose fandom of wrestling predated his involvement in the industry.

    Grade

    A

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Rhodes recalling Funk calling his dad an egg-sucking dog in the airport, then asking Cole at ringside if he is allowed to say that on Fox, was good fun.
    • "From Texas to Tokyo, Terry Funk was extremely passionate. Tables, ladders, chairs, Terry Funk was hardcore."
    • Rhodes introduced the next match between the Street Profits and The Brawling Brutes as a Terry Funk Hardcore Match.

Terry Funk Hardcore Tag Team Match: The Brawling Brutes vs. The Street Profits

6 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins continued their recent roll, defeating Butch and Ridge Holland of The Brawling Brutes in a special Terry Funk Hardcore match.

The match was hard-hitting and physical and, while it may not have featured the chairs and ladders of an ECW-era Funker brawl, it was a good match between two great tag teams that continued the upward momentum of Ford and Dawkins as they prepared for their Hurt Business partnership with Bobby Lashley.

Look for more of this for the victors as they build momentum for whatever the finished product will ultimately look like. A continuation of this feud would hardly be a bad thing if the quality of this match was any indication.

    Result

    Street Profits defeated Brawling Brutes

    Grade

    B

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Holland hoisted Butch up on his shoulders and used him as a battering ram, like Funk famously utilized a ladder in ECW.
    • "Bobby Lashley lost his smile," Graves said on commentary after Butch disrespected him and grabbed a table from under the ring, an unintentional (?) dig at Shawn Michaels losing his smile back in 1997.
    • With Butch down and out at ringside, Ford and Dawkins drove Holland through a table with The Revelation.
    • This was action-packed but not necessarily what one would call hardcore in the same vein as something Funk would have been involved in. Still, who knows how short the notice was and, to be honest, the talent involved can have a strong match even without the bells and whistles. They did just that, with a table spot to boot.

LA Knight vs. Finn Balor

7 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

LA Knight kicked off his career year by feuding with Bray Wyatt.

Friday night, he paid homage to his rival, thanking him for getting him ready for the position he finds himself in before battling fellow Wyatt foe, Finn Balor.

The main event was a good, solid pro wrestling match that highlighted Knight against a top heel and allowed him to score a definitive victory over a former Universal champion.

His tribute to Wyatt, promo on The Miz ahead of their match at Payback, and the crowd's reaction to all of it came together to result in the most significant utilization of Knight as a potential main event star in WWE yet.

He was the guy on this episode and the crowd accepted him in that role, even under the difficult circumstances surrounding the broadcast. On a tough night, he rose to the occasion and that is something the backstage powers that be absolutely took notice to.

    Result

    Knight defeated Balor

    Grade

    A

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Knight credited Wyatt for preparing him for the push that was to come here in 2023 while preserving the feud that the two engaged in entering the year.
    • "Sometimes our greatest foes can be our greatest helpers."
    • "He was getting me ready for ANYTHING."
    • "And Miz, as a wise man once told me, the next time you see me...RUN."
    • Cole, Graves and Patrick revealed Knight will battle Miz at next Saturday's Payback.

Overall Grade

8 OF 8

No one can possibly understand the amount of hurt in the locker room Friday night.

The men and women who took to the squared circle Friday night did so with heavy hearts, still processing the passing of their friend and grieving his loss. They could have easily shown up and gone through the motions, and there would not have been a single person who faulted them for it.

Instead, they turned in spirited performances that honored their WWE family member and continued some key stories entering the September 2 Payback event.

It was a tough night, but a beautiful one that not only celebrated the life of Wyatt, but also honored the late, great Terry Funk.

Under the worst circumstances imaginable, they rose to the occasion and delivered as strong a show as possible.

WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction, Highlights From Aug. 18

    Credit: WWE.com

Celebrating 25 years with WWE, Edge returned to his hometown of Toronto Friday night on SmackDown for a match that may well have been his last with the company.

The Rated R Superstar and Hall of Famer squared off with Sheamus for the first time ever in what was a battle between friends.

On a night in which the iconic competitor was rightly celebrated for his quarter-century of contributions as a revolutionary performer, the company also featured four women who have paved the way for the future of the sport battle in tag team action and legendary luchador Rey Mysterio join The Grayson Waller Effect.

Match Card

1 OF 8

Announced in advance of Friday's show were:

    • Edge vs. Sheamus
    • Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair vs. Bayley and Iyo Sky
    • Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar on The Grayson Waller Effect

The Grayson Waller Effect with Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar

2 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Friday's episode of SmackDown may have kicked off with The Grayson Waller Effect featuring new United States champion Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar, but the promo segment was little more than a background for the making of a match between...Austin Theory and LA Knight?

The opening segment of the show was all over the place but it did establish the fact that there is no tension between Escobar and Mysterio, despite Waller's best efforts.

The interruption by Theory made sense as he finds fault with the idea that Mysterio could just take his protege's spot and benefit from it, and Knight's involvement keeps him in the title after appearing to be the guy to dethrone Theory.

Lastly, it set up a high-stakes match to kick off the show.

Messy or not, it at least accomplished multiple goals in a single segment, efficient booking if nothing else.

    Grade

    B

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • "I can't wait until Edge comes down here and says, 'Thank you, Grayson, for making me relevant again on your talk show,'" Waller said.
    • "Calm down, Beth, I love hot moms," he followed up in response to the reaction of Edge's wife, Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix, who was seated at ringside.
    • "I can imagine it feels great to be United States champion. Right, Santos, you can imagine," Waller said, looking to stir the pot between Mysterio and Escobar.
    • Escobar reiterated his respect for Mysterio, his bond with his mentor and hero stronger than ever. He did, however, blame Austin Theory for him missing out on his US title opportunity.
    • The reaction to Knight damn near blew the roof off the Scotia Bank Arena.

LA Knight vs. Austin Theory for a United States Championship Opportunity

3 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

The Miz spoiled LA Knight's opportunity to challenge for the United States Championship Friday night, distracting him in the closing moments of his No. 1 Contender's match with Austin Theory, drawing him into a chase that ended with Theory scoring a cheap roll-up for the win.

The feud between The Megastar and The A-Lister is destined to continue and there are far worse uses of Knight than that. Miz is perpetually over, has a long history of getting guys over, and he is essentially bulletproof in his own right.

This was pretty by-the-books creative, with the distraction finish that WWE loves, but the crowd ate it up and will be looking for Knight to get his revenge.

Inspired booking? Not necessarily, but Knight is so over right now that it worked. Miz being as great a heel as he is certainly helps.

    Result

    Theory defeated Knight

    Grade

    B

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • The Miz interrupted the start of the match, making his way to the ringside area, where he joined the commentary team, as hinted at Monday night on Raw.
    • Miz compared Knight to Eugene and Doink, repeating the idea that he is but a flash in the pan rather than the next great WWE Superstar.
    • "Where'd he get a running boot like that at? Has he been watching my tapes?" Miz questioned the origin of Knight's in-ring game.
    • "In six months, they'll have a new Superstar they'll be cheering for, chanting their names and buying their merchandise for. That will try to run through me," Miz claimed. of the WWE fans and Knight.

Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair vs. Damage CTRL

4 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair halted the recent momentum of Damage CTRL, knocking off Bayley and WWE Women's champion Iyo Sky in tag team action.

A good, lengthy match, it highlighted Sky and continued to tell the story of Bayley clinging to her leadership of Damage CTRL by directing the champion on what to do next. It did not work, the heels faltered later and Bayley lost the match for her team.

This will ultimately end with Bayley and Sky splitting and the future of Damage CTRL in shambles but for now, they remain united against challengers like Flair and Belair, not to mention Asuka, who was conspicuous in her absence tonight.

    Result

Belair and Flair defeated Bayley and Sky

    Grade

    B+

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Dakota Kai once again accompanied Bayley and Sky to the ring. Damage CTRL is better when ol' "Cap Kota" is around.
    • Everything Sky does is so effortless. We saw it in each of her previous stops and now, WWE fans do, too.
    • Bayley "directing traffic" according to Michael Cole on commentary helped keep alive the idea that she is jealous of, and trying to establish leadership over, Sky.
    • Flair overcame what appeared to be a broken nose and ankle injury to deliver the big boot that sent Bayley into Belair, who finished her with the Kiss of Death for the babyface victory.

The Street Profits vs. The OC

5 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

The Street Profits are about to be a problem for a lot of people on SmackDown, as evidenced by their performance against The OC's Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows Friday night.

More aggressive, physical and focused than ever before, they steamrolled their opponents and celebrated post-match with Bobby Lashley.

The Sky High from Angelo Dawkins into a neckbreaker from Montez Ford is a sweet new finisher, too.

    Result

The Street Profits defeated The OC

    Grade

    B

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Backstage, Bayley and Sky avenged their loss by attacking Belair and further damaging her already injured knee.
    • Dawkins rocked Gallows, knocking him off the apron in a tease of the more aggressive, heelish tendencies the team will likely look to employ in the coming weeks and months.
    • "Renewed focus, new layers of the game..." Corey Graves said of the Profits following their victory over Anderson and Gallows.

Paul Heyman Provides an Update on The Bloodline

6 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

    Paul Heyman is the worst.

    In the best way possible.

The special counsel to "Tribal Chief" Roman Reigns refused to provide an update on the current status of The Bloodline, taunted Kayla Braxton, and revealed that Jimmy Uso will appear on next week's show.

This was a smart way to keep the storyline in front of the audience without burning them out on family drama. Heyman, clearly stressed, refused comment and gave viewers a reason to tune in next week with the revelation involving Jimmy.

It was simple, effective and did not demand a grandiose in-ring segment, allowing more time to be given to Edge and Sheamus for the night's high-profile main event.

Great stuff, mostly do to its simplicity.

    Grade

    A

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • Heyman turning Braxton's inquiries into the state of The Bloodline into taunts directed at her family was such a great, slimy heel thing to do.
    • Heyman revealed that Jimmy Uso will be in the house next week on SmackDown.

Edge vs. Sheamus

7 OF 8

    Credit: WWE.com

Friday's match with Sheamus may not have been Edge's last one, but if it is, he can look back on it as another example of why he will be remembered by an entire generation of fans as one of the best in WWE history.

Also, one of its most adaptable.

Edge could have gone out and hit all of the classics, broke out a high spot or two and delivered the spear for the win. Instead, he worked to his opponent's strengths. Together, he and Sheamus delivered a hellishly physical main event that concluded with The Rated R Superstar pulling out one last spear to just narrowly knock off The Celtic Warrior.

The crowd was electric, the emotion on Beth Phoenix's face only enhanced the moment, and the match that Edge and Sheamus delivered was a fitting one that will be remembered as one of the best TV matches of 2023.

    Result

    Edge defeated Sheamus

    Grade

    A+

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • From the eruption of the fans inside Scotiabank Arena to the tears in the eyes of Beth Phoenix at ringside and the interaction between him and his daughters, this certainly felt like the conclusion of a Hall of Fame career.
    • The crowd booed Sheamus' tease of the 10 Beats of the Bodhran but Edge intercepted it and moments later, delivered a spear through the ropes and to the floor.
    • Good, hard-hitting, physical action in this one. Not a ton of high-risk spots but just good, quality wrestling from two guys with resumes full of this type of match.
    • "You always hear it backstage, nobody hits as hard as Sheamus," Kevin Patrick said on commentary.
    • Edge defiantly flipped the bird to Sheamus after 10 Beats of the Bodhran, daring him to deliver more. The Celtic Warrior obliged.
    • Edge set up for the spear but Sheamus countered with the big knee and Brogue Kick for a great near-fall. Moments later, the Hall of Famer recovered to hit consecutive spears and just barely muster enough energy to put his arms over Sheamus for the win.
    • Michael Cole was at his best here, putting over the enormity of the moment and conveying to fans the significance of what they were watching. Kevin Patrick was equally as good here and you can already see bits of Cole wearing off on him.

Overall Grade

8 OF 8

Friday's show was built on celebrating 25 years of Edge in WWE and it did just that, with superbly produced video packages, an unforgettable entrance that was elevated by one of the loudest pops in recent memory, and a main event befitting the Hall of Famer and future inductee in it.

The women's tag team match was a quality bout and the SmackDown creative forces did a solid job of getting Rey Mysterio, Santos Escobar, LA Knight, Austin Theory, Grayson Waller and The Miz all on television despite time being at a premium.

There was little in the way of development for the upcoming Payback card, but there did not have to be.

Tonight was Edge's night. He, his family and his fans deserved it.

    Overall Grade: A+
